In the 2013 re-release of this game, Sonic instead transforms into Super Sonic once the jump button is tapped again during a jump. Sonic will then automatically transform into Super Sonic in the Zones whenever he jumps while holding at least fifty Rings. In this game, Sonic can unlock Super Sonic after collecting all seven Chaos Emeralds from the Special Stages. On his way down, he met up with his new friend Tails in the Tornado, whom he flew through the sky with. In Sonic the Hedgehog 2, after seemingly destroying the Death Egg, Sonic used the seven Chaos Emeralds he had collected from West Side Island to transform into Super Sonic so he could fly safely down to the planet.

In earlier games like Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic's back quills would upturn like the ones on his head but this was later changed to simply retain their normal position. In the cutscenes of Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), Sonic appears to be entirely golden yellow, with hardly any distinction between the colors on his fur and skin, and his nose is no longer black. In games like Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2 and the Sonic Rush series however, Sonic's middle quills would retain their normal shape, making his overall quill style look identical to Shadow's. Up until Sonic Adventure, his middle head quills would also get longer when transformed. Prior to Sonic Adventure, Sonic's eyes remained black when transformed (except in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Sonic & Knuckles, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles where they would turn turquoise), his golden aura was absent, and his quills would sometimes be more upturned and messy. Over the course of the Sonic series, Super Sonic's appearance has changed gradually. His aura also sometimes displays either faint sparkles or electrical sparks. He also possesses a golden aura that varies in size and can be anything from smooth to flame-like in shape. Additionally, his green eyes become ruby red and his facial expression becomes more aggressive, with his eyes gaining sharpened corners. When transformed into Super Sonic, Sonic's blue fur becomes golden yellow in color, his peach skin gains a slightly golden hue, and the quills on his head become upturned.
